My Journey: From Lost in Engineering to Rediscovering My Passion Through Digital Marketing
I’m 26 years old and currently a housewife, a title I once hesitated to embrace. But here I am, hoping to open a new chapter soon as I explore the world of digital marketing and aim to establish myself as a freelance digital marketer in Kochi. Growing Up with Big Dreams When I was younger, I always dreamed big. If you asked me what I wanted to be, I would rattle off multiple answers: an artist, a designer, a teacher — the list went on. But when high school ended, I felt lost. Despite my love for creativity, I ended up in an engineering college, unsure if it was the right path. Struggling to Find My Creative Outlet in College College didn’t offer the artistic freedom I craved. While I managed to keep up with my studies, I missed the creative competitions and projects that filled my school days. Then, during my second year, a spark reignited. I started an Instagram page, jazzhandmades, where I shared my art — handmade cards, explosion boxes, and other crafts. At first, it was just a hobby, but soon it turned into something more. My very first order was for three Friendship Day cards, and when I sold my first explosion box, I realized this hobby had the potential to grow into a business. By the end of my first year with jazzhandmades, I earned my first 10,000 rupees — a small fortune for a college student! Yet, as my passion for crafting grew, my interest in engineering faded. I even skipped out on campus placements, deciding instead to focus on expanding my small business. Facing Setbacks: COVID-19 and a Saturated Market Then came COVID-19. Like many, my plans took a hit. Suddenly, it seemed like every home had its own crafter, and craft pages were popping up everywhere. Orders slowed, and I felt crushed. The uniqueness of my business was lost, and I knew I needed something more to stand out. So, I turned to digital marketing. I enrolled in an online course, but with life moving fast, I couldn’t keep up. A Series of Job Changes and Challenges Life soon took over. Marriage proposals started coming in, and without a steady job, the pressure mounted. I tried working as an account manager at my cousin’s office for six months, but I knew it wasn’t my calling. So, I revisited coding and eventually got a job as a Flutter developer at a startup. But after six months, I left the job to focus on family life when I got married. Moving to a new place, meeting new people, adjusting to a different culture — it was all overwhelming. And without a job, I began to feel unproductive and lost. I tried reviving jazzhandmades, but the market was different. I even took up a position as a computer teacher at a local school but had to leave after a month when I got pregnant. Once again, I found myself at home, with time on my hands but no clear direction. A Fresh Start with Digital Marketing It was during this time that my husband suggested I give digital marketing another shot. At first, I was hesitant. I’d tried online courses before, but this time was different. I had time on my side, and I wanted to make the most of it. So, I committed to it, with the hope of achieving financial independence and reviving my craft business. Today, I’m diving deep into digital marketing, learning new skills that I hope will help me grow personally and professionally. I’m eager to see where this journey takes me — whether it’s building my business, finding financial freedom, or establishing myself as a freelance digital marketer in Kochi to support other small businesses.
